September is Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs) Awareness Month—an opportunity for social workers to take the lead in primary prevention of FASDs, the range of birth defects and developmental disabilities that can occur in an individual who was exposed to alcohol before birth. From conducting alcohol screening and brief intervention to participating in FASD assessment and referrals, social workers across practice settings play an integral role in protecting the health of the women and families they serve.

NASW Foundation Board Member, Lorraine Cole, PhD, is a recipient of the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America People’s Choice Award. Dr. Cole, a U.S. Department of the Treasury employee, and Corvelli McDaniel were honored with this award  Also called the “Sammies” and known as the “Oscars” of government service, the award recognizes the duo for creating and leading Treasury’s Bank Mentor-Protégé Program.

The NASW Foundation is pleased to award 2020-2021 Ruth Fizdale research grants to the NASW-New Jersey Chapter and the NASW-Oklahoma Chapter. Each chapter has received a $2,000 grant. The Fizdale Program underwrites chapter research projects that link practice and policy issues with relevant, emerging, social issues, in an effort to facilitate effective service delivery.
